What is Literacy Through Photography (LTP)?
Literacy Through Photography (LTP) is the in-school education program created by FotoFest International to help students in grades 3-12 strengthen basic learning skills, particularly writing and critical thinking skills. It is a comprehensive program that includes curriculum and teacher training. LTP uses photography and visual imagery as tools to stimulate students’ writing, analytic abilities and communication skills.
LTP has been working in Houston schools for twenty-three years, and teachers widely praise its ability to stimulate students’ engagement in classroom learning by advancing their technical, creative and higher-order thinking skills.
The heart of the LTP curriculum is powerful - students are making connections, reflecting, expressing thoughts and feelings in a real and meaningful way. The LTP program is a unique way to improve critical thinking and writing skills while using the camera as a tool for expression.
– Diana Del Pilar, Principal, Helms Elementary School, Houston, 2012
LTP is now used in more than 9 school districts in the greater Houston area as well as various cities throughout the United States.
